Gonzalez Blasts Cardinals 10-0

Brian Gonzalez homered twice including a grand slam in the first inning to lead the Mavericks’ offense in their Thursday night home victory over Calvert Hall (MD) by a 10-0 margin.

Jason Morozowski tripled and singled to drive in two runs, and pitchers Andre Martinez, Ryan Castellanos and Gonzalez combined on the 8-hit shutout.

Adam Duarte singled and scored twice to spark the Maverick offense in the first two innings.  Nick Basto and Richard Trotter contributed singles to help mount two run-scoring rallies in the 5th and 6th innings.

Calvert Hall dropped to 11-2 and Archbishop McCarthy advanced to 15-4-1.

Next up for the Mavericks: a trip to the all-new Marlins BallPark in Little Havana on Monday April 9th to face long-time regional rival Key West at 4PM. The Mavericks last played the Conchs in 2011 in the regional semi-final game at Key West, winning 12-2 on the road en route to their repeat state title run and national championship season.

Mavericks Stun Pace with 5-run First, Cruise to 6-0 Victory

Archbishop McCarthy (14-4-1) struck early and often in a continuation of a rain-shortened game with Monsignor Pace (13-6) with an explosive first inning and righty ace Nick Travieso went the distance to record the win.  Monsignor Pace starter Alex Perez  was hit hard quickly by the Maverick offense and the Spartans could not answer with their own offense off of Travieso, who fanned seven in six innings pitched.  Andre Martinez had pitched the first inning back on March 7th when the rains came.

With one out and Adam Duarte on first in the bottom of the first, Nick Basto singled to centerfield and Travieso helped his own cause with a single to left to load the bases.  Eddie Silva then stroked a two-run single to right field to post the first two runs, and was followed by Brian Gonzalez who lined a two-run double down the left field line. Travieso added a run-scoring single in the second inning to extend the lead to 6-0 which held up as the final score.

Travieso, Silva and Gonzalez each finished the night with two hits apiece.

Next up for the Mavericks:  a match-up with Calvert Hall from Baltimore, Maryland (9-1-1) on Thursday at 7PM then the “Field of Dreams” showcase game at the all-new Marlins Park in Miami against Key West (5-11) on Monday April 9th at 4PM.

St Brendan Down Mavericks 5-2

A night after flexing their muscles against district opponent Pembroke Pines Charter, the Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks found themselves searching for the bit hit that never came in a 5-2 loss to St. Brendan, one of the top teams in Miami-Dade County.
The Sabres avenged a loss to the Mavericks in last year’s Selective Recruiting Invitational Spring Break tournament. In that game, St. Brendan was treated to a dose of aggression from the home team that resulted in a 15-7 Mavericks win. But Friday night, it was St. Brendan’s turn to be the aggressor.
The Sabres came out of the gates flying against Mavericks starter Ryan Castellanos. In the first inning, St. Brendan scored three runs on five hits and two Mavericks errors. The uncharacteristic errors contributed to the inning, but it was the Sabres’ bats that did most of the damage. Chiqui Carrera, Miguel Ceballos, Sly Edwards, Eric Alvarez and Dayan Cubas all had singles in the inning. “I think that first inning was huge,” said Sabres coach Joe Cubas. “Anytime in a ballgame when you can get on top early it makes a big difference. You put the other team on the defensive, and they have to play catch-up, and the other thing that happens is the level of confidence increases for your club, and that’s what we saw tonight.”
The story on the mound for St. Brendan was Conley Diaz. The Sabres starter went the distance, throwing more than 140 pitches. Diaz worked in and out of trouble all evening, relying on a sharp breaking ball to keep Maverick hitters off balance. The performance was one that caught catcher Cubas’ eye.
“This game meant a lot to us, because last year they kicked our butt,” said Cubas, who was one of the offensive stars for the Sabres with three hits. “Conley was incredible for us tonight on the mound. He was hitting his spots, and as the game wore on, he just picked up steam. He was the key to this win tonight.”
Over the past few years, Archbishop has been the team to put pressure on its opponents and force mistakes. Friday night, the Mavericks were hit with a dose of their own medicine. St. Brendan was aggressive on the bases and at the plate, and that contributed to four Archbishop errors, something that has rarely been seen in recent seasons.
Offensively, the Mavericks were getting on base, but they failed to produce the big hit to bring them back in this one. On the night, the Mavericks stranded 12 runners, continually threatening to get back in the game, but the clutch hit eluded the defending national champs.
“He (Conley) did a great job against us,” said Mavericks head coach Rich Bielski. “He threw a lot of pitches, but he kept battling. It seemed like we had him on the ropes a few times, even in the last inning, and we hit some balls hard, but he always seemed to bear down when we got guys on base, and he made some big pitches.”
For St. Brendan, the win capped off a week in which they had already clinched the top seed in district that includes Gulliver Prep, Key West and Coral Shores. Coach Cubas talked before the game of how he was trying to keep the team focused on team-oriented goals and stressed keeping his players’ heads from blowing up after their strong start this season. After Friday’s game, Cubas acknowledged that will be no small task.
“Us coaches have our work cut out for us,” said Cubas. “But we will do our best to continue to preach the team concept. At the end of the day, it’s the wins and losses that count the most, and we are starting to play our best baseball at the right time of the season. Hopefully we can keep it up through the end of the season and the playoffs.”
Despite the loss, Archbishop did reach one of its goals this week when it clinched the top seed in District 6A-15 with a win over Pembroke Pines Charter on Thursday night. The Mavericks will have to put Friday’s loss behind them quickly as they make up a game with Monsignor Pace on Monday.

Basto Leads Mavs Past Pines Charter

Nick Basto led the Archbishop McCarthy offense with three hits including a bases clearing triple and a home run to support Maverick aces Andre Martinez and Nick Travieso in an 8-0 blanking of district foe Pines Charter.  The win clinches the number one seed for the Mavericks in the upcoming district playoffs over the Jaguars (8-5) who will be the number two seed.

Bastos’s second inning blast got things going early for McCarthy (13-3-1). Martinez recorded nine strikeouts in five innings of work and Travieso punched out four of his own in 2 innings of relief.

Second baseman Jason Morozowski also contributed two hits and made defensive plays in short right field repeatedly during the game.

The Mavericks will now face Miami St. Brendan High School Sabres (14-4, first place in their district) on Friday night at 7pm.

Travieso, Mavericks Walk Off With 4-Run 7th To Down Patriots

When two top teams in South Florida get together on a Friday night, the electricity in the park is usually high, and sometimes, the intense atmosphere can lead to a game of the ages. That was the case Friday night at Archbishop McCarthy, where the Mavericks played host to Florida Christian.

The teams traded blows throughout the night, but in the end, it was the two-time defending state champs that closed the game in a pile between first and second base. Nick Travieso capped a wild seventh inning by hitting a walk-off single, giving the Mavericks a come-from-behind 5-4 victory.

“Before the at-bat, my coach was telling me ‘he has to come after you with a fastball, with bases loaded, he can’t put you anywhere,’” said Travieso. “It feels great. I felt like I let my team down a little bit early in the game, and as a senior, I didn’t show leadership, but my last two at-bats, I felt great. I was seeing the ball better, letting the ball come to me, and it felt good picking up my team like that.”

Although Travieso had the game-winning hit, this Archbishop win was a complete team effort. Andre Martinez started the game for the Mavericks, and he threw the ball well, giving up only one unearned run in five innings of work. Despite the strong showing, Martinez was down 1-0 when he left the mound, and that was because Patriots starter Christian Palaez was matching Martinez pitch for pitch. Palaez went 5.1 innings, giving up one earned run.

The pitcher’s duel kept the bats for both teams quiet for most of the night. In the seventh, with the score tied 1-1, the two teams showed why they will both be contenders when playoff time arrives next month. The Patriots were the first to show their mental toughness in the top of the inning.

Julian Abreu led off the inning with a single, and after a hit-and-run fielder’s choice and a ground-out to third, it looked like this inning would be much like the other six, with little offense.

Nick Basto steals second in the fourth inning.

Zachary San Roman then hit an infield single, which was followed by an Aramis Herrera walk, loading the bases. Mavericks coach Rich Bielski then did what he has done many times before in this situation, he summoned sophomore Brian Gonzalez to get the final out.

What happened next was consecutive singles by pinch-hitter Tito Torres, second baseman Curtis Salcines, and Brandon Canizares, resulting in three Patriots runs. Torres was thrown out at home by center-fielder Adam Duarte, a play that would prove to be as important as any other in the game.

With Archbishop down to their last three outs, it was up to Duarte to start what would eventually turn out to be a game-winning rally. Duarte, batting in the lead-off spot, hit a one-out single. Jason Morozowski followed with a high hop double over second baseman Salcines’ head, bringing to the plate the one batter on either team that had hit the ball well all night, Brandon Roberts.

Roberts, on cue, launched a booming triple to the right-center field gap, scoring Duarte and Morozowski and putting the tying run on third base with one out. For Roberts, it was his third hit of the night.

“We hit the ball hard all night, I just hit a couple of ground balls that got through,” said Roberts. “Some days I’m going to hit the ball hard and not get the hits, tonight it happened with other people. I stepped up tonight, and the next night somebody else is going to step up.”

A walk to Gonzalez set the stage for Nick Basto, who hit what possibly could have been a game-ending double play, but the ball skirted up the middle, tying the game at four. A walk to Jonathan Quintana and the Travieso single gave Archbishop the type win that has been known to kick-start title runs.

“I saw tonight in their eyes, that now they’re starting to believe in themselves,” said Bielski. “We kept telling them how good they could be as coaches, but they weren’t quite buying it yet. Now we’ve come back twice last week, we came back again tonight, and it’s not just one run, it’s three runs. Not every team has that comeback ability, and that is special, and that can take you far.”

Andre Martinez threw five strong innings for the Mavericks.

As good a win as it was for the Mavericks, the Patriots have had to deal with losing close games all season long. They are talented enough to play with any team in the area, and Head Coach Ernie Padron knows that baseball works in mysterious ways sometimes.

“They caught some breaks with some hops, and we caught some breaks as well with bloopers that fell in,” said Padron. “Baseball gives and takes it away. It’s a game we all love, but man, it definitely takes a toll on you.”

The Patriots and Mavericks built their schedules as tough as possible to play playoff baseball all season long, and the schedule next week gets no easier for either team. Archbishop will face Pembroke Pines Charter Thursday, with the winner claiming the top seed in the district tournament, before hosting St. Brendon Friday night. Florida Christian has a match-up looming next week with Westminster Christian.

Mavericks Tie Gators in Dramatic 7th

Brandon Roberts lined what would be a game-winning two run single up the middle, but Gator shortstop Justin Barreneche made a sensational stop to hold the game to a tie in the 7th as Archbishop McCarthy  (7-2-1) tied 8A Barbara Goleman (7-1-1) 1-1 on Thursday night.

Brian Gonzalez led the tie comeback with a booming one-out double in the bottom of the seventh off of Gator starter Sean Carrazco and the Mavericks trailing 1-0 in what had been a long drawn out pitchers and defensive battle with Maverick starter Ryan Castellanos. The three hour low scoring game even included a 38-minute rain delay in the 6th inning with the Mavericks threatening and the bases loaded. But Carrazco came back out after the delay and got Jonathan Quintana to fly to right to end the potential rally.

Gonzalez also pitched the 7th and shut the Gators down to give Archbishop McCarthy another chance in the 7th.

Next up is the Selective Recruiting Invitational Tournament next week at AMHS and at venues in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The website to keep track of schedules and results is www.thesrbaseball.com.

MARTINEZ LEADS 8-0 SHUT OUT OF WEST ORANGE

Senior lefty ace Andre Martinez pitched four quick innings and struck out six leading the Mavericks to an 8-0 shutout of the class 8A defending district champion West Orange Warriors from Winter Garden, FL.  Martinez dominated and set the table for bullpen relievers Jason Morozowski, Brian Gonzalez and Jason Stettner to each go one inning and complete the combined shutout.

The Maverick offense exploded with a 5-run first, keyed by a two-run single by Nick Travieso, followed by run-scoring singles by Jonathan Quintana, Gonzalez and Eddie Silva. Warrior starter and highly-touted potential MLB draftee Anthony Seise, while delivering 90+ mph velocity on his fastballs, struggled with his control and the Mavericks were able to pounce early.

Then in the second inning, after Brandon Roberts led off with a walk, Nick Basto hit a towering drive that sailed over the left field fence for a 2-run homer.

Ryan Sinzenich delivered an RBI single in the 4th to top the Maverick offensive outburst of eight runs on eight hits.

Archbishop McCarthy improved to 7-1 and now head into a busy week of 7PM home games starting Monday when Summit Christian of West Palm Beach, defending 1A champions, comes to Southwest Ranches.  Wednesday night is the annual rivalry game against Miami Monsignor Pace. Then Thursday, it is Barbara Goleman HS from Miami Lakes.

Castellanos and Thompson Stifle Belen, 6-1

Jason Morozowski singled three times, starting two Maverick run-scoring rallies and scoring twice and Nick Travieso iced the game with a two-run homer in the 7th inning as Archbishop McCarthy defeated regional rival Belen Jesuit 6-1 in Miami on Wednesday to advance to an overall record of 6-1.

Starting pitcher Ryan Castellanos scattered four Wolverine hits in 4 innings of work to record his second win of 2012 and reliever David Thompson slammed the door shut with three shutout innings of his own to get the save. Maverick pitching has been lights out so far in the first seven regular season games.

Brandon Roberts doubled and singled off of Belen Jesuit senior starter Christian Solis to also spark the offense and Nick Basto contributed an RBI single. Eddie Silva singled in the second inning to stake the Mavericks to a 1-0 early lead. The Maverick offense clicked with timely hitting all afternoon.

Archbishop McCarthy plays again on Friday night against visiting the West Orange Warriors from Winter Haven FL. Home game time is 7PM.

Explorers Top Mavericks in Pitchers’ Duel

The Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks traveled to Miami to take on the Columbus Explorers tonight in a battle of high school baseball powerhouses and suffered their first defeat of the season 4-1.

The Mavericks threatened in the first when Jonathan Quintana doubled to left center but he was thrown out attempting to steal third base and Nick Basto flew out to center field to end the inning. In the bottom of the first, starter Andre Martinez gave up two of the three hits the Explorers would get for the game. The big blow was a three-run home run by Explorer Mike Oberhausen on the first pitch he saw that followed a walk and a double with two strikeouts sandwiched in between. That one pitch proved to be the difference in the game.

Archbishop McCarthy threatened again in the top of the third inning when Jason Morozowski reached second base on a left-fielder error. Morozowski then advanced to third on a wild pitch but was tagged out at home in a rundown involving lead off man Adam Duarte who was attempting to steal second base on the play.

Neither team mounted much offense as the game wore on: Martinez settled down to strike out 8 in four innings and reliever Nick Travieso recorded 4 strikeouts while Columbus ace Jesse Almonte posted 8 punch outs of his own. The teams exchanged manufactured runs in the 6th. The duration of the quick moving game was one hour and 45 minutes. Columbus remains undefeated at 4-0.

The Mavericks (3-1) will host Sagemont saturday night at 7pm.

Mavericks Get First-Ever Win over Hollywood Hills

The Mavericks traveled to Hollywood Hills HS for the first time and came away with an 8-0 district game victory over the Spartans. The Mavericks pounded out 14 hits led by Nick Basto who had 2 hits with 3 RBIs and Jason Morozowski with three hits and 2 RBIs. Ryan Sinzenich also had three hits.

Sacrifice fly RBIs by Brandon Roberts, Nick Travieso and Adam Duarte brought in the other three runs. Eddie Silva added two hits in the rout.

Five Maverick pitchers combined for the 3-hit shut out with starter Andre Martinez notching his second win of the year. David Thompson threw 3 solid innings striking out 5 including the side in the 6th. Jason Stettner closed it out in the bottom of the 7th and was aided by a double play from Jonathan Quintana who caught a shallow fly ball to rightfield and threw a perfect strike to catcher Krystopher Gonzalez for the tag out at home to preserve the shut out.

The Mavericks (3-0) face their toughest test so far in the young season when they travel to Miami Friday night to face perennial power Christopher Columbus at 6:30 and will be back at AMHS Saturday night where they will host Sagemont at 7pm.
